Beaded beauty: Van Cleef & Arpels Perlée

Van Cleef & Arpels unveils exclusive new watch designs as part of its delicate Perlée line

Watches & Jewellery 9 Aug 2022

In 2008, French luxury house Van Cleef & Arpels launched Perlée, its “joyfully feminine” jewellery line. Translating to “beaded”, Perlée jewellery is characterised by intricate gold pearls, often tightly woven together in rings, bracelets, earrings and necklaces. The collection may be modern in the context of the maison, which was founded in Paris in 1896, but the beading technique dates back to the 1920s, when it was used to highlight precious stones in individual pieces. Having appeared in various forms over the decades, it wasn’t until 2008 that Perlée was given its own range within the Van Cleef family, and it quickly became one of the most popular and recognisable collections.

This September, Van Cleef & Arpels will introduce two distinctive new Perlée watch models. Five new timepieces are playfully designed with interchangeable bracelets made from grosgrain fabric, a matching Perlée bangle – a first for the maison – and a flexible bracelet to be chosen within the collection. The watch dials (four are available in 23mm and one in 30mm diameter) are set with either mother-of-pearl, onyx or yellow gold and are enveloped in Perlée’s unique gold beading. Another addition within the new collection are the striking “secret watches”. Inspired by the romance of the traditional toi et moi (“you and me”) ring motif, but with a contemporary setting, these beautiful pieces feature brightly coloured spheres that can discreetly cover the mother-of-pearl watch face to serve as a piece of jewellery. The beaded strap is carved into an open bangle shape, further enhancing the jewellery quality of the timepiece. It hugs the wrist like a second skin, and comes in a selection of different colours and metal combinations.
