THE BACKGROUND

‘When the Good Lord begins to doubt the world, he remembers that he created Provence.’

French writer Frédéric Mistral may have been a little biased when he jotted down these words, having won a Nobel Prize in Literature for his efforts in restoring the Provençal language, but those familiar with the region will know how truly intoxicating it is.

Provence has it all: beautiful scenery, ancient history, excellent museums and art galleries and world-class produce, food and – naturally – wine. It’s perfect for outdoorsy types wishing to cycle through pretty cobblestoned villages and past endless lavender fields and cypress trees, or explore the many glamorous coastal towns. Provence enjoys an incredible 300 days of sunshine per year, and temperatures remain pleasant even in the off-season months of April-May and September and even October – and are actually preferable times to visit to avoid the sweltering heat and crowds of high summer.

THE VILLA

New to luxury holiday rental company SJ Villas is Mas de Brunard, an elegant, privately owned property in the heart of Provence. Located amid the stunning Alpilles mountain range – replete with pine forest, limestone peaks and olive groves – and just five minutes from the quintessentially Provençal village of Eygalières, Mas de Brunard is the ideal base for a relaxing family vacation. Although it may prove difficult to tear yourself away from the villa once you’ve settled in.

A “mas” is a traditional Mediterranean farmhouse, and Mas de Brunard has charm in spades with its classic Provençal architecture and sprawling, meticulously landscaped gardens. The recently completed interiors are chic, minimalist and modern yet homely, with the clean, light-filled spaces broken up by tasteful contemporary artwork. The house can accommodate up to 14 and includes a dedicated children’s bedroom with in-built bunk beds that little ones will adore. Outside there’s a boule pitch, alfresco kitchen and dining area, lounge and large heated swimming pool surrounded by pool chairs. E-bikes can be rented to explore the area and there’s also a concierge service and chef on request. Daily local markets on your doorstep will provide you with abundant produce to enjoy at the villa or take home, including fresh vegetables, lavender, handmade baskets and perfumes.
