Trends come and go but style – and the allure of tailor-made clothing – never goes out of fashion.

When we think of made-to-order, it tends to be of the precision-cut Savile Row suit – a perfect fit complete with flourishes of hand-picked detail. But just as people’s bodies come in all shapes and sizes, so too do our feet. And yet, when it comes to buying shoes, the choice is usually disappointingly restrictive – fixed styles offered in a limited choice of sequential sizes.

Historic British shoemaker Edward Green knows all about the importance of the perfect fit. The company was founded 130 years ago by a talented young shoemaker on the premise of achieving ‘excellence without compromise’. Still adhering to these values of quality craftsmanship, Edward Green continues to make beautiful shoes from its Northampton workshop, producing everything by hand in small quantities.

Through Edward Green’s made-to-order service, customers will not only enjoy their ideal fit, but each pair of shoes can be customised with different materials, colours and finer details to make them a unique expression of personal taste and character. This ranges from adding unique punch patterns on brogues to finishing butter-soft boots with different coloured lining, or even modernising a pair of Oxfords in alligator skin.

A wide selection of classic and contemporary shoe styles can be reworked using Edward Green’s extensive range of lasts, leathers, soles and finishes to create a customer’s ideal aesthetic. Some styles lend themselves particularly well to the made-to-order service. The Galway is a handsome almond-toed field boot cut from classic country calf. On the surface, it is ideal for country pursuits, but with its supple suede detailing and Edward Green’s textured London Grain with a thicker welt and rubber sole, it becomes a different boot altogether – rugged and urbane.

Most of Edward Green’s production is in small batches for the world’s most prestigious retailers, so the company workshop is set up for variation in a way that higher-volume factories are not. This allows custom shoes to be made with around a 25% surcharge – proportionately less than other shoemakers, yet producing shoes made to an unparalleled standard.

Edward Green’s London boutique, located on the prestigious Jermyn Street, carries more than six different widths of classic styles, allowing customers to find their perfect fit. Goodyear welted and made from the finest leather, these shoes can last for years, being re-made again and again on the same last. Given their longevity and quality, Edward Green custom-made shoes are a more sustainable choice and a cherished item that holds a special place in the owner’s heart – as well as their shoe collection.

We may be working from home more these days, but pulling on a stylish pair of shoes that completes a look just the way you hoped instills confidence and a professional mindset. Slipping on a pair of made-to-measure shoes is like welcoming an old friend. Give them the respect they deserve, and our feet will thank us.
