Tom Faulkner’s journey in furniture design began in the early ’90s with a humble coffee table that garnered attention from friends and family. Thirty years later, he now has two showrooms, a workshop in Swindon, Wiltshire, and a team of over 20 welders, finishers, painters and cabinet makers, creating his designs to order. Striking forms, clean lines and dramatic silhouettes define Faulkner’s unique style, and all his pieces are imbued with a sense of timelessness, evoking the sublime and elemental beauty of the natural world. His new seven-piece collection titled Skye fits seamlessly into this house style, as well as marking an exciting development as he and his team harness the malleable qualities of stainless steel to a bold and dynamic effect.

The new collection seamlessly marries art and functionality. The items are all made from stainless steel, which dramatically reflects light and also ensures their suitability for outdoor use. Faulkner cites abstract sculpture pioneers Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth, as central sources of inspiration in his practice, and their influence is evident in the new range. The contrast between the undulating form of the amorphous outside shape with a perfect ellipse on the furniture’s internal surface recalls Hepworth’s and Moore’s oeuvre, exemplified in Pelagos (1946) or Three Points (1939-40), both currently on display at Tate Britain. Like Moore and Hepworth, Faulkner looks to the natural world for inspiration and the collection’s title alludes to the pieces’ cloud-like silhouette. The peaks and troughs of the rugged landscape on the isle of Skye are also evoked in the oscillating surface of the items.

Composed of a dining table, two console tables, a side table, a bench, stools and a plinth, the series is the first large-scale collection from the artist-designer since 2019, and will be able to be seen in person at Faulkner’s Pimlico Road and New York showrooms. He explains that the unveiling of his new collection is an ‘important’ moment for his eponymous brand: ‘Skye is a celebration of the brand’s 30-year heritage, and I am overjoyed to have the support and skills of my loyal team, many of whom have been with me for over 20 years.’
