The Royal Exchange is at the heart of Christmas in the City, and to celebrate the festive countdown, it has collaborated with artist Karan Singh to create a giant Advent calendar. It will surround the main entrance at the top of the shopping destination’s grand western steps, where Cornhill and Threadneedle Street meet, outside Exit 3 of Bank station.

Bringing a vibrant and joyful splash of colour to the City, Singh’s artwork is a reflection of the City of London, with its mix of old traditions and modern culture.

‘With the artwork I’ve created for The Royal Exchange Christmas Advent calendar, I wanted to illustrate something that would feel bold, modern and vibrant when juxtaposed with the ornate, traditional architecture of The Royal Exchange building… the way a very historic place can feel so fresh and alive because of all the people that fill it,’ says Singh.

‘It’s not overtly tied to Christmas, but more the idea of the capping off the year with a celebration with your friends and family. It’s a really bold, graphic representation of this idea through little cues, such as abstracted confetti and baubles.’

Throughout December, the Advent calendar doors open each day to reveal a luxury prize from one of The Royal Exchange boutiques, including a Leica Sofort camera, Tateossian cufflinks, a Mulberry handbag, a Fortnum & Mason hamper, a Cutter & Squidge Christmas cake and a Smythson 2020 diary.
