Zenith teams up with artist Felipe Pantone for a bold, contemporary take on the Defy 21

Argentinian-Spanish artist Felipe Pantone describes his work as a byproduct of the digital age, with a distinctive style that explores and plays with the light spectrum. The result is impactful and colourful work defined by its neon gradients, geometric forms and optical illusions. This combination of artistry with a technological edge makes him a natural fit for boundary-pushing Zenith, as the duo team up for the manufacture’s first watch created with a contemporary artist.

The challenge tasked to Zenith’s R&D team was just how you accurately and vividly replicate these technicolour works on a timepiece. And in typical style, it has come up with a number of innovative approaches and watchmaking firsts to achieve the spectacular rainbow hues. Perhaps the most attention-grabbing are the bold metallic gradient tones on the bridge, which uses a three-dimensional PVD with silicon particles as a surface treatment to achieve the perfectly transitioning colours.

The same state-of-the-art process has been applied to the central hour and minute hands, which take on the unusual jagged lightning bolt shape that is a signature of much of Pantone’s work. Meanwhile, the moiré optical effect on the top bridges and portions of the dial has been produced using thin alternating white and black bands, created using an intricate laser-engraving and lacquering technique.

Completing the contemporary look is the black ceramic case with a grid pattern, alongside a matching rubber strap featuring a warped grid motif. However, those who want to dial up the design can switch it out for a second strap option with a central insert that changes colour depending on the angle thanks to its iridescent finish. Limited to 100 pieces, this bold take on Zenith’s highly precise Defy 21 even comes presented in a special box that mimics a hardback cover book straight out of a gallery.
