David M Robinson’s workshops across the UK allow the creation of bespoke jewellery in collaboration with the company’s clients

It is 60 years since David Robinson began his goldsmithing apprenticeship at a jewellery repair shop on Liverpool’s Hanover Street, and while a lot has changed since then, Robinson’s eponymous business maintains the commitment to craftsmanship that he honed as a trainee.

After his stint in jewellery repair, Robinson studied at night school to become a Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain before opening his very first, very small, workshop.

Robinson went on to win two De Beers Diamond International Awards for his elegant creations, certifying himself as a leader in British jewellery – it’s something that’s still clear to see in the fact that many of the company’s collections have remained on its roster for decades. The Hopscotch collection, for instance, is inspired by the childhood game and is characterised by clusters of sparkling diamonds arranged like paving stones for a contemporary, playful twist. The collection is now a regular on the red carpet.

Today, as well as partnering with some of the finest watch and jewellery brands in the world, David M Robinson employs more jewellers than any other independent retailer in England’s north-west to design and make its pieces in house. This group of experts, which the company considers a family, means it can also offer a fully personalised jewellery-making experience.

“Bespoke” is a word often reserved for men’s tailoring – conjuring up images of Savile Row workrooms that bear no resemblance to a  jeweller’s bench – but David M Robinson’s newly enhanced service holds a range of similarities. Attention to detail, for one thing, as well as a people-focused approach that is less about getting clients in and out as quickly as possible, and more about listening to their preferences to create something they will treasure for a lifetime.

Inspired by the founder’s passion for handmade jewellery, the bespoke service affords clients the chance to collaborate directly with one of the team’s skilled designers for something new, or to reimagine an existing piece of jewellery. Later this year, the company will enhance the experience offered to clients taking advantage of this service with a new, dedicated bridal bespoke space in its showroom within London’s Canary Wharf.

The bespoke process begins with an in-person conversation at one of the company’s showrooms in Liverpool, Manchester, Altrincham or Canary Wharf. It’s here that the designer will gather inspiration, use their knowledge to elevate the client’s ideas and begin the initial sketch right there and then.

It will be used as the starting point for the team’s goldsmiths to create a final proposal and to source stones that are best suited to the design, in collaboration with a network of diamond and gem merchants. David M Robinson’s goldsmithing team will then make this special iteration by hand in one of its UK workshops.

‘This is what makes DMR so special – combining the friendly expertise that we have here in our showrooms with the skill of our craftspeople, to turn our friends’ dreams into a reality,’ says Maria, senior sales ambassador at DMR London. The resulting creation holds importance not only for the occasion it commemorates but in the knowledge that there is no other piece of jewellery in the world quite like it.
