A Lange & Söhne gives its Grand Lange 1 an elegant redesign with slimmer proportions and contemporary grey dial
The Lange 1 has become a modern classic of watchmaking, so when A Lange & Söhne introduced its slightly bigger counterpart in the Grand Lange 1 in 2003, it was a welcome addition to its collections. Retaining the same distinctive asymmetric dial and refined aesthetic, the 41mm case diameter is both a comfortable fit for the larger of wrist, while still sitting snugly under a cuff. Now a new model brings subtle refinements as well as a contemporary new look with its grey dial, presented in white or pink gold.
This latest take has a slimmer profile, with a reduced height of 8.2mm. The careful attention to proportion extends to the dial, with the contrasting textures of the recessed counters lending an architectural feel. Complementing the signature oversized and off-centre display of the time is the smaller seconds hand and a large date at 1 o’clock. Meanwhile a power reserve has been incorporated in an elegant sweep across the right-hand side.
Its sizable reserve of 72 hours is achieved through construction of the manual-wind calibre L095.1. Instead of the double-barrel movement seen in the Lange 1, this watch instead has just one mainspring barrel, with its larger diameter improving the energy storage. Viewable through the sapphire-crystal caseback, the movement is as impeccably finished as the exterior, featuring the trademark nods to the watchmaker’s German heritage including the three-quarter plate made from untreated German silver that has been intricately finished with Glashütte stripes.
