We are proud to reveal Brummell’s listing for 2022’s Ones to Watch in the City. Celebrating the outstanding achievements of rising stars in London’s financial services sector and allied fields, the 30 individuals under the age of 40 selected for this year’s list are set to make it to the top of their markets, while making the world a better place with their inspirational endeavours. The expert judges, Jacqueline Onalo and Daniel Ricard, applied rigorous criteria to the nominations, looking for demonstration of drive, energy and entrepreneurial spirit alongside positive contributions both inside and outside of work. We thank the judges (bios below) and congratulate those nominated.

JACQUELINE ONALO is a multi-award-winning human rights lawyer, leadership development trainer, international speaker, lecturer, and equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging (EDIB) expert. She is also trustee at Comic Relief, co-founder of Inclusion Convention and chair of Community Development Initiatives, and holds advisory roles with Executive Science, African Business Chamber, Launchpad and BRAAD, among others.

DANIEL RICARD is the operations leader for PwC UK’s sustainability and climate change consulting business. He is also a trustee for Opening Doors and is the founder of NEXUS, which brings together the leaders of LGBTQ+ networks/ERGs and is a visible LGBTQ+ role model, having featured in the Outstanding Future LGBT+ Leaders In Business list, and co-led the PwC Shine network.

 

LISA ARDLEY-PRICE
MANAGING LEGAL COUNSEL, NATWEST GROUP

Ardley-Price moved into the in-house legal team at NatWest in 2015 and has firmly established herself as an expert in trade and supply chain fi nance. Beyond her day job, she has set up training programmes for her team and businesses to upskill and self-serve on legal matters, and she is heavily involved in the bank’s gender and disability employee-led networks. She provides coaching and mentoring to peers and junior colleagues, facilitates “Lean In Circles” and #IamRemarkable self-promotion workshops, and is on the leadership team for the bank’s gender network development programme. She also mentors students through the University of Law and entrepreneurs through Digital Boost, and is Women in Business accredited.

DANIEL CHAN
DIRECTOR, PWC

Chan leads the fi rm’s third-sector audit team in London and for charity audits nationally, and acts as senior statutory auditor for and on behalf of PwC, including for some of the largest charities in the UK. He is a member of PwC’s charities management board and he leads PwC’s thought leadership for the charity sector. Named in the Accountancy Age 35 Under 35 rankings in 2019, he is a member of the Charities SORP Committee and chair of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) Charity Committee. Outside PwC, he volunteers as a trustee of UK Youth, a national youth charity, and with the Sea Cadets, empowering young people to share his passion for watersports.

SENIOR MANAGER, PWC

Fofanah works with C-suite executive teams across sectors to help them make decisions and align quickly; bring together a diversity of perspectives; be bolder in their solutions, and overcome rational, emotional and political problems. Spotting the superhero in everyone, he has demonstrated his ability to help win multimillion-pound deals, increase PwC’s win rate and deliver work rated with 9/10 value scores. Passionate about leading new innovation, he launched and runs several initiatives including In My Community, focused on building an inclusive community of excellence in south-east London that is thriving 20 years from now, and The Power of Listening, a programme to embed listening as a habit in PwC, starting from the top down.

NICOLE CRENTSIL
CEO, BLACK GIRL FEST

A Ghanaian-British businesswoman, angel investor and cultural curator based in London, Crentsil is the CEO of Black Girl Fest – a global platform on a mission to build projects with purpose for Black women. She is also the founder of BIG SIS, a new network supporting the personal development of creative working women. Crentsil currently sits on the Members Advisory Board for the Tate and is also a VC scout and angel investor with Ada Ventures – a £34m fund investing in underrepresented founders. In 2021, she was awarded by Forbes’ 30 under 30 for her contribution to arts and culture, and Time Out London named her a “visionary” changing the city for the better.

CAIA DALY
TREASURER AND MONEY MARKET DEALER, BNP PARIBAS

Daly has worked with BNP Paribas for 11 years, and has been part of the BNP Paribas ALM Treasury team for almost two years, most recently as the EUR treasurer. She became the co-chair of the Parents and Carers SteerCo at the end of 2021, and the network has since re-launched and is planning numerous exciting events on topics such as “Raising the profile of shared parental leave” and the “Transition to being a carer”. The group aims to enhance the support provided to carers within the bank and seeks to facilitate culture change, and to be an active participant in delivering tailored solutions for working families.

SARAH FENNELL
HEAD OF DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION FOR MACQUARIE GROUP IN EMEA

Fennell focuses on creating an inclusive culture that works for everyone, while also embedding equity throughout the employee lifecycle at Macquarie in EMEA to ensure that all employees have the opportunity to thrive. Fennell fi rst moved into DEI in 2014 at HSBC, moving to Moody’s and then Macquarie. She was shortlisted for Exceptional Inclusion by the British LGBT Awards in 2021, and Rising Star in 2015 and 2016. Recent recognition for culture change for her companies includes Macquarie being selected as a top 10 employer by the Ethnicity Awards (2021) and British LGBT+ Awards (2022) and Macquarie climbing to the top spot of the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index in 2022.

ETHAN SPIBEY (pictured above)
DIRECTOR, PURPOSE UNION

Spibey works with global clients to create and launch campaigns on social purpose, with a focus on diversity and sustainability. He is also founder and director of FreedomToDonate, an award-winning campaign that helped to implement the UK’s new blood donation policy for gay and bi men. He launched and runs the LGBTQ+ professional network InterComms LGBTQ Network, bringing together almost 1,500 professionals working in communications, and recently established the industry’s first LGBTQ+ mentorship scheme, THRIVE. He also founded and runs PROUD Beer, and he was named in the 2022 PRWeek Power Book and recognised as an Outstanding Contributor to LGBT+ Life 2022 by the British LGBT Awards.

BELTON FLOURNOY
HEAD OF DIGITAL IDENTITY, PROTIVITI UK

Flournoy leads the digital identity practice at Protiviti UK and is a longstanding advocate for LGBT+ inclusion and diversity. Over the past year, he was a host for myGwork’s WorkPride conference, and, in January 2021, he joined the advisory board for The London School of Economics Inclusion Initiative (TII). In 2022, he also joined the Technology Community for Racial Equality (TC4RE). He is an EMPower & OUTstanding Top 20 Future Leader, a Google UK Top 10 Black Role Model, and was named a Diversity Hero and Inspirational Leader by the British LGBT+ Awards. At Protiviti, he co-founded the UK LGBT+ network, proPride, and supported the establishment of the UK ethnic minority network.

JADE IJEH
LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT RELATIONSHIP MANAGER, BNP PARIBAS

Responsible for supporting BNP Paribas with learning and development activities, Ijeh is also a health and wellbeing ambassador with five years’ voluntary telephone counselling experience for a mental health charity. She used this passion and experience to co-design and launch BNP Paribas’ first all-employee mental health awareness programme. Outside of her day job, she is part of the Race and Ethnicity working group, and has contributed significantly to the culture and awareness workstream with the launch of the allyship toolkit. She has also been the lead on the successful roll out of a “lunch and learn” series, with a focus on racial literacy and fluency, and joined the Multicultural Network steering committee.

REBEKAH KOFO-KASUMU
PARTNER, HEAD OF FINANCE, LOCALGLOBE

Kofo-Kasumu is a partner at tech venture capital fund LocalGlobe, which invests in tech founders at the earliest stages. She oversees the fi nance function across all funds and LocalGlobe’s charitable foundation, Phoenix Court Works. The foundation works to support its neighbours in Somers Town, while helping other organisations to grow diversity within the VC ecosystem. Kofo-Kasumu was the head of fi nance for FTSE 250 ICG Enterprise Trust and before that a senior manager at KPMG in Bermuda, where she founded the Women in Leadership programme and organised a Women in Leadership conference. Outside VC, she is a trustee of music educational charity Music Masters, and at Peut-Être, a children’s dance theatre company.

EUNICE KORMI
MARKETING ANALYST, BARCLAYS

Following her internship at Barclays in summer 2019, Kormi has been proactive in promoting diversity and inclusion internally and externally. Last year, Kormi and three colleagues launched the Everydayisms campaign across the public policy and corporate responsibility function, recognised as the most-read story in May’s D&I edition and in June. Within Q4, Kormi established and hosted the first-ever Black Talent in Marketing event, a two-day event that supports Black university students in gaining insight into different areas of marketing and comms at the bank, helping to bridge the inequality gap within the industry. She also launched her first clothing brand, IMROK (@imrok.collection), in August 2019, and sits as a young advisor for the RSA, advocating for young people’s economic security across the UK.

DANIELLE STJERNVALL (pictured above)
VP IN CYBERSECURITY, JPMORGAN CHASE & CO

In today’s evolving cybersecurity landscape, Stjernvall ensures that her role as a data visualisation VP in cybersecurity provides her stakeholders with valuable and actionable data insights on cybersecurity threats. Alongside her role, she mentors young students, taking part in the JP Morgan Schools Challenge, a programme designed to help support 12-15-year-old students from disadvantaged backgrounds in London by pairing them with mentors from across JP Morgan, and creating teams focused on tackling environmental issues. Students learn skills to help with future career prospects, and by taking part, Stjernvall hopes to inspire more young women to pursue careers in data and technology.

HANNAH MCNAMARA
SENIOR PROJECT MANAGER, PROFESSIONAL SERVICES, BARCLAYCARD

Since joining Barclaycard in 2019, McNamara has been promoted twice, from junior PM to a senior vice president. She recently reverse-mentored the CEO of Barclays Payments and acted as her MD’s ex-officio. Off the side of her desk, she is an active advocate of diversity and inclusion and a promoter of gender equality. Co-chairing the Northampton region of Win – Barclay’s gender network – she also sits on the UK SteerCo and leads a Customer and Community working group in Barclays Payments. Initiatives have included virtual speed networking events, a career development programme, introducing an apprentice cohort into her business area and signing herself up for the London Marathon for Refuge.

ANNALISA MENSAH
ASSOCIATE LEGAL COUNSEL, ELLIPTIC

Mensah has led work on public policy solutions since 2012 to address youth unemployment, education equality and social mobility on a national level. She was appointed co-chair of the Youth Leadership Board at Citizens UK and spearheaded the first-time voters’ campaign, which was covered by The Guardian. She has consulted for a range of start-ups, such as fintech start-up Incept.io on commercial strategy and pre-seed and seed raises, and was a part of the strategy team that built the award-winning diversity and inclusion programme BCLP’s Commercial Café, increasing the number of Black applicants obtaining training contracts at BCLP. She currently sits as a trustee at Peer Power Youth and on the Alumni Advisory Board at Prime Commitment.

HOLLY NARDI
VICE PRESIDENT, INVESTMENT CONSULTANT AND CONTENT CREATOR, REDINGTON 

Coming from an unconventional background – a family of magicians – Nardi is passionate about bridging the financial literacy gap. She created the Get Woke Not Broke platform, has featured on podcasts and national TV, written for PensionBee, been the keynote speaker for UpReach, and was a panellist on the event “No Member Left Behind”. As Redington’s first investment content creator, she  led its net-zero marketing campaign and designed and coordinated Pension Pitstops, Redington’s new service (launching in June 2022) that aims to be the MOT of the DB pension world. She was awarded Professional Pensions’ Rising Star of the Year and Investment Week’s Marketing Influencer of the Year.

EMMA PHILLIPS
PARTNER, LOCALGLOBE AND LATITUDE

An investment partner at LocalGlobe, Phillips invests in early-stage technology businesses, such as Otta, Hertility Health and Pento. She also works closely with founders to ensure they take care of their own mental health, and launched a peer exchange group programme for founders to confide in a trusted group of peers. Away from day-to-day investing, she co-founded Meals for the NHS during the fi rst phase of the global pandemic, raising over £1.8m from nearly 18,000 donors to deliver more than 300,000 meals from independent restaurants to NHS workers in 146 hospitals over a 100-day period. She also helped to launch Sunflower Relief, a company dedicated to building tools and services to support the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.

WILLIAM TORRIE (pictured above)
VICE PRESIDENT LEGAL ENGAGEMENT, BARCLAYS BANK PLC

After starting his career on Barclays’ 2018 graduate programme, in 2020 Torrie was promoted to manage a cross-industry portfolio of multinationals, and in 2021, he was made VP in legal engagement. As deputy chair of Win UK, his highlights include: collectively raising over £200,000 for various women’s charities, developing and leading numerous initiatives to grow the female talent pipeline, supporting families in East London, and distributing 500 sanitary packs to female refugees. This year, he founded the Alison Scott Scholarship, awarded to four female students at Queen Margaret University, providing the opportunity to upskill, travel and gain work experience while they study.

DENNIS OWUSU-SEM
RELATIONSHIP MANAGER, BMO GLOBAL ASSET MANAGEMENT; FOUNDER, SUCCESS TALKS

Owusu-Sem founded Success Talks, which has hosted 43 live experiences to support the career progression of ethnic minorities, and has 230,000 YouTube views and 130 speakers. It has also held bespoke workshops for senior leadership teams across the UK to improve their understanding of racial challenges at work. From 2019 to 2021, Owusu-Sem spearheaded the BMO GAM Black History Month celebrations and has helped to shape BMO’s Zero Barriers to Inclusion 2025 plan. Following the 2020 BLM protests, he was recognised as a “Top 25 Black British Business Leader to Follow” by Forbes and was invited to speak about tackling racial inequality on BBC World News.

DANIEL PARK
CONSULTANT, VENTURE CAPITALIST

With a background in economics and Mandarin Chinese, Park has held various roles within strategy consulting and start-up organisations in Europe and Asia. Formerly a London-based consultant at KPMG working largely on commercial due-diligence projects for private equity clients, he has now refocused on identifying and growing start-ups, with a track record as an investor for early-stage businesses in the ed-tech, co-living and freelance sectors. Aware of the potential of web3 applications, Park is now serving as fractional CFO for a Latin America operating blockchain and crypto business, Delnorte Holdings. He is a supporter of the charity Global Witness, which challenges abuses of power to protect human rights and the environment, and has contributed to research in their investigative articles.

CHRISTOPHER PRIEBE
FOUNDER, ZELT

Before founding Zelt, Priebe was a tech investment banker at Merrill Lynch, and a software investor at private equity fi rm TA and venture capital fund Global Founders Capital. During his career, he had the opportunity to work with individuals including the founders of Revolut, Slack, Rocket Internet and HelloFresh. Inspired by their success and leveraging his expertise in enterprise software, he has embarked on a mission to fl ip the $50bn market of HR and IT management software on its head and build a new generation of software that is centred on the needs of, and is loved by, employees – rather than business administrators – and is backed by the investors behind category-defining companies such as Airbnb, Uber and Spotify.

HEAD OF GLOBAL ASSETS, REDINGTON 

Leading Redington’s advisory team in strategic growth areas, Gillespie was one of the architects of global assets in 2018, identifying an attractive opportunity to develop Redington’s client base outside the core UK corporate pensions business. She is the lead consultant to clients that represent £150bn+ of assets, prioritising and securing the best outcome for the end beneficiaries. Passionate about educating people on investing and financial wellbeing, she is the co-founder of Best Intentions – a financial wellbeing company that aims to help everyone grow their wealth and feel confident with their cash through charity partnerships, online courses, events and podcast interviews. She has also won Young Investment Woman of the Year.

DEBBIE PHILLIPS (pictured above)
HEAD OF MEDIA CAMPAIGNS, NATWEST GROUP

Almost five years ago, Phillips was involved in a serious accident that left her in intensive care for a fortnight and off work for more than four months. Following this, she set up the monthly Breakfast Club at NatWest, where female members discuss issues that disproportionately affect women in the workplace. In 2019, she became global co-chair of NatWest’s Gender Network with 13,000 members, and runs it in her own time. She has led PR campaigns including a partnership with Stylist magazine, and is a founding member of the AllBright club. This year she is launching a podcast called New Matriarchs, providing careers advice and inspirational interviews aimed at young women.

HARRY QUEENBOROUGH
GLOBAL LONG-TERM VALUE ACTIVATION LEAD, EY

Queenborough helps companies to drive sustainable long-term value for their stakeholders by integrating environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors into their business strategy and transformation journeys. He is a multi-award-winning advocate of workplace inclusion and a visible role model within the LGBT+ community. A visible bi+ role model at EY, he founded EY’s Bi+ Community to help cultivate a culture of belonging for bisexual and pansexual employees. He mentors emerging LGBT+ leaders and was nominated as EY’s Inspirational LGBT+ Role Model in 2021. He founded the inter-company Bi Inclusion Summit and previously served as the first male co-chair of EY’s Women’s Network.

LISA SHU, PHD
FOUNDING EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, NEWTON VENTURE PROGRAM; PROFESSOR, NEGOTIATIONS FOR STARTUPS

With more than a decade of experience in the MBA classroom, Shu helps entrepreneurs to create and capture value for their teams through teaching them the vital skill of negotiation. Together with London Business School and LocalGlobe, she founded the Newton Venture Program to o  er inclusive training for venture investors. The aim is that, by 2030, half of VC investors will be from currently overlooked backgrounds. Shu created Newton’s curriculum combining academic rigour with expertise from top investors – A16z, Atomico, Seedcamp, and Sequoia. Shu recently launched the course Negotiations for Startups to help first-time founders transform from reluctant negotiators into confident deal architects.

WADZIE TINOFIREI
HEAD OF CONTROLS, OVERSIGHT AND ASSURANCE, AVIVA INVESTORS

During Tinofirei’s time at Aviva Investors, she was quickly promoted to lead the teams responsible for ensuring e  ective operational risk and control management of Aviva Investors’ operations and IT teams and internal control reporting to Aviva Investors’ institutional clients. As one of few senior Black leaders, she has been an advocate for diversity and inclusion and has led the internal Ethnicity Workstream, taken part in reverse mentoring of executive committee members and has been a mentor and support for Black and Asian colleagues. As testament to her leadership potential, she was also sponsored to take part in the inaugural Black Women in Asset Management Leadership Accelerator programme in 2021.

JUANITA ROSENIOR (pictured above)
MANAGING DIRECTOR, TGRG (THE GIRL IN THE RED GLASSES)

Rosenior is the founder and managing director of TGRG, a boutique multidisciplinary agency covering marcomms, PR, as well as talent management. Her clients are atypical visionaries with the desire to uplift others, empower, and inspire, and she has supplied talent for the likes of Viacom, Channel 4, Sky, BBC, Bloomberg, Channel 5, Facebook, Marks & Spencer and BT, as well as corporates and public- and private-sector companies. Notably, she was the inaugural publicist for World Afro Day and has worked with the likes of Black Cultural Archives, the Folio Society and Sonia Friedman Productions.

SHRUTI VISHWANATH
LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT RELATIONSHIP MANAGER, BNP PARIBAS; CO-CHAIR, EARLY CAREERS NETWORK

Vishwanath has worked with BNP Paribas for 12 years, starting in India with varied roles before moving for her current role in the UK. Beyond her day job, she is Speak Up culture manager, new joiner experience manager, SteerCo member in the Gender Equality network, and the youngest lead in the UK Culture Forum working alongside senior leaders from exco. She is also co-chair of the Early Careers Network, focused on empowering new and junior employees through webinars, events and coaching. Accredited under the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, Vishwanath mentors internally and externally with CIPD to support people in their early careers.

ROBYN WOODROW
PROGRAMME MANAGER, GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY INFRASTRUCTURE SERVICES, BARCLAYS

Woodrow began her career as a product owner for a computational linguistics start-up delivering a niche text-to-speech tool to new customer groups and geographies, increasing the number of paid subscriptions by 10 per cent in six months. She now holds a senior position at Barclays as a programme manager specialising in technology transformation, governing the delivery of multi-million pound global, application and infrastructure cloud migration programmes. An ambassador for early careers talent and LGBTQ+ inclusivity, she project-manages the emerging leaders programme, which enables 160+ leaders in the organisation to reach their potential and prepare for their next move at Barclays.

EDWIN WHITEHEAD
SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT, SUSTAINABLE INVESTMENT, REDINGTON

Whitehead began his career in sustainability in 2020 when he was asked to build Redington’s sustainable investment team – now seven people strong. He works with Redington’s largest clients, advising on more than £50bn of assets on all aspects of responsible investment. He helped to build Redington’s climate strategy action plan, and wrote Redington’s fi rst stewardship report – it became one of the fi rst signatories to the UK Stewardship Code. Whitehead leads the asset owner workstream of the Investment Consultants Sustainability Working Group, sits on the Net Zero Investment Consultant Initiative, and represents Redington on the Local Government Scheme Advisory Board’s Responsible Investment Advisory Group.

MAYA WELFORD
BEHAVIOURAL FINANCE SPECIALIST, BARCLAYS

After graduating in 2018 with a first-class BSc Psychology degree from King’s College London, where she received the Desmond Tutu Award for her commitment to serving society, Welford joined Barclays as an HR graduate before being promoted to global wellbeing manager. She is now a behavioural fi nance specialist within the wealth & investments division, where she uses her understanding of human behaviour to improve client investment outcomes. Through Barclays’ Gender Resource Group, Welford founded the Charity Mentoring Programme in 2019, benefiting more than 500 individuals. Welford’s many accolades include Future Leader 2021 (Involve), Best Mentor 2021 (UpReach), Barclays UK CEO Award 2021 and Future Leader 2022 (Empower).
