Carl F Bucherer and Caran d’Ache celebrate their partnership with a watch and writing instrument pairing
In this digital age, it can seem that the art of handwriting is a forgotten one. But like mechanical watchmaking, there’s a charm, craftsmanship and tactile appeal that cannot be replicated through modern technology. Caran d’Ache is one such brand that understands this well, having been crafting artisanal writing instruments for more than a century from its home in Geneva. United by both its shared pursuit of quality and vision for a sustainable future, it has teamed up with fellow Swiss industry pioneer, watchmaker Carl F Bucherer, for a new collaboration.
The first product of the partnership is a set comprising a watch and a rollerball pen, building on the considerable legacy of both brands while bringing a modern edge through surprising elements of the designs. For the occasion Carl F Bucherer has chosen the Manero Flyback Signature as the canvas, a technical and sporty watch powered by the precise CFB 1970 automatic calibre. Here it has been rendered in cool grey and silver tones, from the contrasting chronograph counters to the striped Nato strap. In a chic yet playful touch, this is punctuated by rainbow-coloured hour markers, recalling the shades of Caran d’Ache’s pencils, while the strap features bold red highlights.
The paired writing instrument echoes this sophisticated feel, likewise injecting a subtle touch of whimsy. Taking inspiration from the Manero Flyback’s classic form, this silver-coated pen is decorated with a deep ‘crown effect’ guillochage that lends it its streamlined silhouette. As with the watch the pleasure is in the finer details, from the hand-lacquered multicoloured triangles to the thin red line engraved in the clip recalling the timepiece’s seconds hand.
