Temper City bar relaunch

Chef Neil Rankin and his drinks guru Chris O’Neil have relaunched the bar area at Temper City. Brummell paid it a visit to find out more

The relaunch sees a selection of new food and drinks added to the bar’s menu. Alongside a brand new range of cocktails, including the New Delhi Sour, the saucily named Chamomile The F*** Down, the Glasgow Kiss and the Cheapside Date (the option we tasted, a zesty fresh combination of grapefruit, lemon rose infused gin and Campari) are tasty on-the-house bar snacks such as vegetable crisps with kimchi yoghurt, poppadums with mango chutney, garam masala popcorn and spicy peanut mix.

We also tasted more substantial bites, which are available to buy at the bar, including the Temper City mutton roll, onion and samphire pakora and dry goat paratha. Our favourites were lighter-than-air crab beignets served each on an individual spoon and the sweet and spicy Korean “haggis” wrapped in a lettuce leaf.

As well as an impressive selection of New World wines, Temper City has an expansive gin list of more than 20 gins from around the world, including Xoriguer from Menorca, The West Winds from Australia and Ki No Bo from Japan. Each gin has an ideal tonic and its own bespoke gin-based cocktail created by the award-winning Temper bar team.

Music is a key element in the atmosphere of Temper City. The order of the day is 80s classics and power ballads, lending an epic feel to proceedings.

The bar area has a great view of the central, open kitchen surrounded by counter-style seating for diners, so it’s possible to enjoy the fiery theatre of the chefs preparing Temper’s delicious meals while enjoying a G&T. It’s more than likely that this will tempt you into turning a few drinks into dinner (and a few more drinks).
