Sunspel’s Riviera Polo shirt is a holiday wardrobe icon with an A-list story

The only polo you’ll need for summer days

There is an undeniable art to summer dressing. The trick isn’t to strip down as much as possible (save that for the beach), but to choose well-made, flattering pieces that will help you keep your cool. Literally.

Step forward Sunspel’s Riviera Polo shirt. Like many Sunspel garments, this bestseller looks understated but has a rich history. The design as we know and love it today is actually an update of Sunspel’s signature Riviera Polo shirt from the 1950s, inspired by the French Riviera. Cut from 100 per cent Supima cotton, it offers breathability, comfort and a contemporary fit, ticking off every requirement for warm-weather dressing.

The shirt also has some serious Hollywood pedigree, having been specially amended by Sunspel to fit the specifications of Daniel Craig for his first 007 outing in the 2006 film Casino Royale. Longtime Bond costume designer Lindy Hemming approached Sunspel to undertake the “task”, alongside making all of Craig’s T-shirts, underwear and polo shirts.

The navy-blue Riviera Polo makes a brief but memorable cameo in a scene in the Bahamas, and, though not as instantly iconic as Craig emerging from the waves, the look has become something of a blueprint for men in holiday mode. Smart, sophisticated and suave, just like the fictitious spy himself, this is how you do holiday dressing with aplomb.
