Sumosan Twiga: Where East meets West

With its innovative pairing of Japanese and Italian cuisine, vibrant cocktails and lively entertainment, Sumosan Twiga is one of the most energetic and elegant spots in London for dining, drinking and dancing

Before the pandemic put a stop to socialising, there was a growing trend for bars and restaurants to provide a place to have dinner, drinks and a party atmosphere all in one venue, instead of punters feeling the need to head to three or four different locations in one night. Now, in the ‘new-normal’, there is a revived appetite – literally – for enjoying world-class epicurean experiences and dynamic entertainment in one place, rather than having to travel around town.

Sumosan Twiga, on Knightsbridge’s Sloane Street, is a pioneer of this concept. Set over three stylish floors designed by architect Michele Bönan, it comprises a dedicated restaurant with separate bar on the top floor and an exclusive nightclub in the basement. The restaurant itself takes influence from renowned Japanese restaurant Sumosan, established by Alexander Wolkow and his daughter Janina, and the iconic Italian Twiga created by Billionaire Life founder Flavio Briatore, enabling guests to order exceptional Japanese food and traditional Italian cuisine from the same menu during their meal.

The unique two-part menu is headed up by newly appointed executive chef Alessandro Scala, whose 15 years in the industry spans experience at Coya London, multiple five-star hotels in Italy, and much-lauded London restaurant Zafferano as part of his impressive CV.

Based on using fresh seasonal produce and the finest ingredients, the Italian section of the menu consists of classic Venetian-inspired dishes such as paccheri with lobster and handmade black truffle ravioli, while the contemporary Japanese kitchen offers key dishes including Angus with yuzu and kosho butter, and Alaskan marinated miso black cod. The sushi is also a highlight, with a selection of exquisitely prepared nigiri, sashimi and maki rolls, including the restaurant’s signature – isobe maki king crab.

When it comes to drinks, the upstairs bar at Sumosan Twiga is overseen by Claudiu Mnerau, and it is as suited to relaxed after-work cocktails as it is for celebrating special occasions. The cocktail menu and wine list feature an array of modern and time-honoured favourites, alongside an extensive choice of sake to complement the Japanese cuisine.

What’s more, for those who wish to enjoy an evening of fine dining and swinging jazz, the restaurant host live music nights every Tuesday from 6.45– 8.45pm, with highly accomplished, Irish-born performer Sarah and The Jazz Band creating a truly captivating setting to dine, drink and dance the night away.
