Panerai pays tribute to the historic yacht Eilean with a limited-edition Radiomir that comes with a special sailing experience
Panerai’s rise to horological fame is inextricably linked with the exploration of the oceans; after all, one of its most famous timepieces, the Radiomir, was conceived to meet the demands of the Italian Royal Navy in the 1930s. And as a company that holds its heritage close to its heart, it is only natural that it would dedicate time and resource to honouring other icons of the seas that also hold their own unique place in history.
William Fife III, the third generation of a renowned family of Scottish yacht builders, created the Eilean in 1936, just before the first prototype of Panerai’s Radiomir was unveiled. And in recent years this important vessel has been lovingly restored and brought back to its former glory with the help of the watchmaker.
A new timepiece pays tribute to both these titans of nautical design. Taking direct inspiration from the original Radiomir, albeit with a svelter profile, the signature exaggerated cushion-shaped steel case features a two-tone look. This includes bronze highlights across the bezel, crown and caseback using material repurposed from the Eilean during its restoration. And while this tells a story in itself, over time these elements will also develop their own patina unique to the wearer and the journey of the watch.
Other subtle nods to the Eilean include the stunning deep-blue dial, with a textured surface recalling the boat’s teak deck, while the side of the case is engraved with the dragon emblem seen on its bow. Meanwhile, features of those first Radiomirs come through in details such as the divided hour hand, now filled with Super-LumiNova instead of the original Radiomir luminous compound.
Making this limited-edition run of 50 pieces even more special is an exclusive NFT offered with the watch, marking Panerai’s first foray into this digital arena. Each owner will receive a unique digital wallet based on secure Web3 blockchain technology to hold the NFT, which provides proof of ownership. A one-of-a-kind artwork is also included, and the NFT unlocks access to an enhanced client experience, with ongoing tailored content, communication and events from the brand. This kicks off in style in June with the Eilean Experience, which invites owners to take in the delights of the Amalfi coast from this historic yacht.
