Model behaviour: Sunspel

British model Edie Campbell has designed an exclusive capsule collection for Sunspel this autumn with stylish wardrobe essentials inspired by traditional menswear

Edie Campbell has some rather unconventional style icons. The British model turned to music and movie idols for her foray into fashion design for heritage clothing brand Sunspel. These include Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker, enigmatic singer-songwriter Nick Cave and, ahem, Harry Wormwood. Specifically, Danny DeVito’s portrayal of the car salesman in the 1996 Matilda movie.

The thread that links these three unlikely muses together is that they all wear great suits (yes, even Mr Wormwood in his garish checks and matching hats). ‘I liked the thought that maybe we could create a small range to bring the idea of a uniform to womenswear,’ Campbell explains on her new Edie Campbell for Sunspel collection.

Those familiar with the Sunspel aesthetic can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that anything the British company puts its name to will be refined and beautifully made. Campbell, too, clearly has a keen eye, which is no surprise given her many years in the fashion industry.

As a teenager, the west London-born model was part of a Vogue feature about “young Londoners to watch out for”, and was later catapulted to fame after appearing alongside Kate Moss in a Burberry campaign. Over the years, she has maintained a signature aesthetic that balances her English rose beauty with a tougher edge. Her boyish cropped hair and penchant for androgynous clothing give her a unique quality that looks equally at home on the pages of a Love magazine photoshoot as it does on the Paris runway.

It is this soft masculine energy that permeates Campbell’s capsule collection for Sunspel, released this autumn/winter season. Every piece is eminently wearable and carefully considered, with Campbell describing them as ‘building blocks that all fit together’.

There are obvious homages to ‘stylish men in suits’ and the aforementioned “uniform” often found in traditional menswear throughout the collection. These include a long-sleeve Contrast Stitch cotton shirt and the Cocker-esque relaxed boy-fit Houndstooth blazer and matching Cigarette pants. A given for Sunspel, every item is made from premium fabrics, often locally sourced, such as the fisherman-inspired cable knit jumper, knitted in England from merino wool.

Campbell already had a connection to Sunspel before the brand asked her to collaborate. Far from wanting her to just be the face of the campaign, it turned to her for guidance on expanding its womenswear. Campbell was an acquaintance of Sunspel CEO Nick Brooke after the two worked together on a small project involving Campbell’s embroidered patches company, Itchy Scratchy Patchy. The call from Brooke came amid lockdown chaos, a time when many of us were reconsidering our wardrobes, and Campbell leapt at the chance to try her hand at design.

‘This collection is about great clothes that will last and you’ll feel good putting them on every day,’ she explains. ‘This fits well with Sunspel, with its heritage of making great classics and staples that are designed to wash and wear well.
