Próspero Tequila and Lockdown Liquor & Co take us on a trip to the heart of Mexico with Cantarita, a new cocktail blend that pays homage to the Jalisco region and its staple drink.

Lockdown Liquor & Co mixologists came up with a fruity and tangy recipe combining Próspero Blanco Tequila with a citrusy blend of fruit – grapefruit, lime, and orange – and a sweet touch of agave nectar. Sweet yet refreshing, Cantarita is inspired by the signature Jaliscan cocktail – named cantaritos – that is typically served in a jarrito, a clay pot that keeps the temperature cool even in tropical heat.

Under the direction of Stella Anguiano, who is one of the first female tequila master distillers, and with singer and actress Rita Ora recently appointed chief creative officer, Próspero handcrafts 100 per cent blue agave tequila, celebrating the work of women in a male-dominated industry.

‘The vision of cantaritos clay pots stacked high along the roadside bars in Jalisco is one of my happiest sights. Trips to the Próspero Tequila distillery often end with a refreshing cantaritos, so the fact that Lockdown Liquor & Co has helped us to create our very own version here in the UK makes my heart so full,’ Ora said.

Launched during the pandemic to fundraise for NHS Charities Together, Lockdown Liquor & Co manufactures premium blended cocktails using unique top-quality ingredients. Co-founders Jack and Natasha Durling explained that they imagined Cantarita as ‘the paloma’s supercharged sibling’.

Offering a glimpse into rich Jaliscan heritage, the pre-mixed drink encapsulates the colourful diversity of Mexican landscapes, from rolling hills of blue agave to white-sand beaches lined with swaying palm trees. Aside from tequila, the mountainous western state is also well-known as the birthplace of some of the country’s most iconic traditions, such as mariachi music and sombreros.
