The annual event is back and better than ever – here’s what not to miss
Starting today, London Gallery Weekend returns to the capital for a three-day celebration uniting over 120 galleries across the city. This year features exhibitions at art institutions from gallery giants such as Gagosian to the more niche creative corners of east London. No matter the viewer, there is certainly something for everyone’s taste – or postcode. So, here are our recommendations for the spots not to miss this weekend – all free to visit from 5-7 June.
Air Package on a Ceiling by Christo
CHRISTO: AIR
Gagosian Gallery, Mayfair
It isn’t an art fair without even a whisper of the Gagosian name. And true to form, the gallery’s Grosvenor Hill location has an exhibition of works by pioneer of contemporary art Christo, plus an indoor installation by him and his partner Jeanne-Claude – who were known for transforming ordinary objects by wrapping them in everyday materials, as well as large-scale public artworks. You can see solo graphite works by Christo, with the exhibition title, Air, coming from the key piece, 1968’s Air Package on a Ceiling – a 52-foot-long floating object softly lit from within.

Flower by Eileen Agar
EILEEN AGAR
Alison Jacques, Mayfair
Wander west to Alison Jacques gallery in Mayfair for some Surrealist colour. A fixture of London’s contemporary art scene, the gallery is displaying the work of Argentine-British artist Eileen Agar, an iconic figure of 20th-century Surrealism in Britain and beyond. Agar’s work combines elements of Surrealism, Cubism and Abstraction while challenging the rules of these movements and the male dominance that saturated both them and the world she inhabited. The exhibition spans decades of Agar’s career, showcasing her classic use of collage composition with geometric shapes and bright colours.

3 to 12 Nautical Miles by Shahzia Sikander
SHAHZIA SIKANDER: HIGH SEAS; CLOSED SKIES
Victoria Miro, Islington
The Victoria Miro gallery has been a mainstay of the London art world for decades: its Islington location, inside a converted factory, has been active since 2000. This London Gallery Week, the coveted space is showcasing the work of New York-based visual artist Shahzia Sikander with an animation, 3 to 12 Nautical Miles. Commissioned by M+ and Art Basel, the animation is made from hand-painted images exploring power balances between Britain and China, accompanied by new mosaics and works on paper.

Swelling by Naotaka Hiro
NAOTAKA HIRO: OTHERS
Herald St, Bethnal Green and Bloomsbury
A (fairly) new kid on the block in terms of an exceptional London gallery space, Herald St gallery has been an East End establishment since 2005. Its second exhibition of Japanese artist Naotaka Hiro explores the extent of the human form, including the artist’s own. It features new paintings where he practices the “unknowability” of his own body, acting as both artist and subject by wrapping his body around the canvas. The paintings are also accompanied by a bronze sculpture, Lump 1, made of a compressed, rearranged body cast.

This and That installation
THIS AND THAT: FRANCESCA ANFOSSI, GABRIELE BEVERIDGE, JANE BUSTIN, ALAN CHARLTON, ROSE DAVEY, IAIN HALES AND GARY WOODLEY
Sid Motion Gallery, Bermondsey
Finally, venture down south for a display of art and collaboration at the Sid Motion Gallery. The second collaborative exhibition by the Bermondsey gallery and artist Rose Davey features a collection of objects and paintings; brought together, the exhibition displays how nothing exists in itself – every object, colour and idea is only understood in relation to the others. The show is anchored with a table and set of stools that only makes sense when sat at, displaying the common themes between painting, sculpture and natural material.
