Nomos Glashütte introduces three bold new limited-edition models into its Autobahn collection

Nomos Glashütte introduced the Autobahn in 2018, a timepiece that had all the minimalist markers of the German watchmaker while introducing a bold new look into its collections. Its distinctive aesthetic was in part down to the vision of renowned furniture designer Werner Aisslinger, who drew on his love of classic cars, albeit interpreted through a thoroughly contemporary lens.

A new trio of watches in the family are what Nomos Glashütte describes as the ‘director’s cut’. Each named after a different freeway in Germany – A3, A7, A9 – they come in some of Aisslinger’s favourite colours, with a vibrant feel reminiscent of the vehicles popular in the country in the 1960s and 1970s. Each is limited to 175 pieces, in tribute to the years of watchmaking heritage of Nomos’s native Glashütte.

The new models certainly make an impact. The A7, the longest German freeway that connects the north and south, pairs a deep-blue dial with a striking luminous yellow ring. As if moving from night to day, the A3 has a bright white design enhanced further by the highlights in modern orange. Rounding off the trio is the sleek black-and-grey A9, which draws from Aisslinger’s experience of taking regular night trips along this road.

Like the fine-tuned engine of a car, underneath the eye-catching design the watches are just as well engineered. They come powered by the watchmaker’s in-house DUW 6101, which despite incorporating a date compilation measures in at a slender 3.6mm. Finishing it off in style, each timepiece comes on a special metal bracelet designed especially for these limited editions.
