Balancing act: Jessica Ennis-Hill

Brummell caught up with the Olympic medal winner to discuss motherhood, and look back on the top moments of her athletic career

What is the proudest moment of your career?

Winning Olympic Gold in London: I achieved my lifelong goal in front of a home crowd. It is followed closely by the exhilaration of winning World Gold just a year after giving birth to my son.

There’s been a lot of focus on sportswomen and pregnancy – what has been your experience of juggling motherhood and a career?

Coming back from pregnancy to athletics, it was harder than I could have imagined. I overcame the physical changes to win World Gold and Olympic Silver – it was a rollercoaster of injuries. It was hard – you don’t want to miss precious moments with your baby, but training calls. I had to be super disciplined and couldn’t have done it without my husband and our parents.

You’ve been called a sporting inspiration for women. How important are female role models?

Really important – I’m a girl from Sheffield who many thought was too small to be a heptathlete. I hope all those who aspire to get into sport, but feel there are obstacles, just give it their best.

You’ve been an Omega ambassador for a few years. What attracted you to the watchmaker?

Omega has a long history of being timekeeper for the Olympics and an incredible heritage in sport. It’s reliable and strong, and its timepieces are classical and elegant. These qualities for me make it a standout brand and one I am extremely proud to work with. I am currently wearing a rose gold Constellation – it goes with everything.
