A real gem: Piaget Polo Skeleton

Piaget’s considerable watchmaking and jewellery expertise comes together in a new addition to the Polo family

From its beginnings, Piaget’s Polo has had a certain glamorous appeal. Launched in 1979 by Yves G Piaget, it quickly found favour with the jet set and leading cultural icons of the time, with its sleek, sophisticated and sporty design bringing just the right balance of casual elegance for everyday wear.

Over the decades the collection has proven to be one of Piaget’s most versatile canvases, with the latest member of the family dialling up the opulence to a new level in an impressive showcase of both watchmaking and jewellery expertise.

The former comes in the guise of one of the world’s thinnest mechanical self-winding movements, the 1200S1, measuring in at just 2.4mm thick. It took more than two years to transform the calibre into the skeletonised version, displayed to full effect through the dial of the timepiece.

The contemporary slate-grey accents of the movement provide an intriguing contrast to the watch’s dazzlingly jewelled exterior. Here the 42mm case has been adorned with 268 brilliant-cut diamonds, with a further 1,478 across the ‘H’ design integrated bracelet. Its seamless finish takes more than 61 hours to complete, in a tour de force of the skill of Piaget’s expert gem-setters.
