As travellers increasingly seek a new lease of life from their holidays, The Ritz-Carlton, Langkawi offers a holistic approach to wellness rooted in the ancient Malaysian rainforest and the Andaman Sea

‘Have a seat on your mat. Start to connect with your breath,’ my yoga teacher chants, as I attempt to step back from the ultra-fast rhythm of modern life. It is, admittedly, a big ask for a 45-minute class in an overcrowded studio in north London, but taking care of our wellbeing – or at least trying to – seems to me a direct response to the feeling of helplessness aroused by the chaotic state of the world at the moment.

The rise of the self-care movement has also expanded into travel, fuelling a prosperous wellness-tourism industry, globally predicted to be worth around £1 trillion by 2028, according to statistics portal Statista. The growing appetite for travel designed to enhance personal wellbeing reflects a broader shift towards a more proactive approach to health.

Travellers are seeking opportunities to reset physically, mentally and spiritually, combining restorative activities with time spent in peaceful natural settings. To meet this demand, hoteliers worldwide are under pressure to elevate their wellness credentials in ways that feel cohesive and authentic. For some, that presents a challenge; for others, nature does much of the work.

Wellness is boosted by the surrounds at The Ritz-Carlton, Langkawi, especially in the resort’s overwater spa pavilions

‘Wellness is integral to everything we do,’ says Ramy Khamis, resort manager at The Ritz-Carlton, Langkawi, an island just under 20 miles off the north-western coast of Malaysia. ‘We are fortunate to be positioned between an ancient rainforest – part of a Unesco Global Geopark – and the Andaman Sea, both of which are considered natural sources of healing in the region.’

Located in an archipelago a one-hour flight from Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi is defined by dense rainforest dotted with geothermal springs and waterfalls – a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts drawn to holistic retreats. ‘We want guests not only to leave feeling better, but equipped with tools they can draw on long after their stay,’ says Khamis.

Malaysia has a strong tradition of healing practices, deeply rooted in its flora and multicultural heritage and passed down through generations. ‘Malay healers believe in restoring “semangat”, the inner life force, and this concept inspires our treatments,’ says Nurain Qhadirah, spa specialist at the resort. ‘We incorporate rhythmic movements, herbal remedies and grounding rituals designed to release stagnant energy and reconnect the body with nature.’

Treatments unfold to the sound of waves beneath six overwater spa pavilions, designed to evoke the Malaysian bubu – an intricately woven trap used for centuries by local fishermen.

‘Wellness is integral to everything we do,’ says Ramy Khamis, resort manager at The Ritz-Carlton

The soul, as well as the body, is tended to. Take the mandi bunga-inspired ritual, a floral bath believed to cleanse the aura of negative energy and make space for renewal. ‘We use a combination of locally sourced blooms,’ says Qhadirah, explaining the symbolic and therapeutic meaning of each flower. ‘Jasmine for relaxation, rose for heart healing, frangipani for purification and ylang-ylang for emotional balance. The bath is infused with essential oils such as lemongrass, sandalwood and bunga rampai, a traditional Malay blend used to refresh the mind and uplift the spirit.’

The ceremony honours the Malay belief that healing begins with intention and self-awareness. Guests are encouraged to reflect on what they wish to release and what they hope to welcome before the ceremony begins, followed by a traditional blessing.

Throughout the resort, self-care and nature are intertwined. Suites and villas are enveloped by lush vegetation, where monkeys, hornbills and big lizards roam freely, bringing the practice of forest bathing to the next level. Guests can join the Trails of Wonder, a mile-long trek led by the in-house naturalist, offering a closer look at the tropical ecosystem. ‘We invite guests to approach wellness through experiences that feel natural, immersive and deeply connected to our surroundings,’ says Khamis. ‘With a strong emphasis on holistic wellbeing, we make it easy for guests to draw nourishment from their environment.’

Back in north London, achieving that sense of grounding and clarity requires effort; here, perched serenely between rainforest and sea, it feels almost inevitable.
