Triumph releases the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X, smaller-capacity models many fans of the brand have long dreamt of

Triumph Motorcycles fans who’ve been waiting for a model from the marque with a smaller-capacity engine will soon be able to mount the bike of their dreams, as the brand adds the Speed 400 roadster and Scrambler 400 X to its line-up.

Launching in India next month, and in all other markets from the start of 2024, these models will hit the roads, evoking the power and style inherited from their lineages. With classic Triumph silhouettes, sculpted fuel tanks and engine profiles, they are inspired by esteemed modern classics like the Speed Twin 900/1200 and Scrambler 900/1200.

Unique to them is the new TR-Series engine, which will notably enhance the off-roading experience offered by the Scrambler 400 X. This fuel-injected, liquid-cooled, 398cc single-cylinder engine generates a distinctive exhaust sound that growls with the confidence of its 40PS peak power and 37.5Nm peak torque.

The crankshaft is balanced to optimise inertia for controlling these bikes at low speeds. The gearbox provides selection between carefully distributed gear ratios with such fluidity as also characterises the bikes’ handlebar-mounted scroll buttons. And a torque-assisted clutch reduces the rider’s work during stop/start riding, keeping them fully as charged as the USB-C socket will keep devices while on the move.

In addition to the new TR-Series engine, the Triumph Scrambler 400 X has a range of features for a fun and agile off-roading experience

While a Bosch dual-channel antilock braking system (ABS) assures firm braking, the chassis on each model has been designed for agile riding, and a low weight and low seat height give the rider a great degree of control at low speeds. Contributing to the Speed 400’s intuitive feel are its mono-shock Rear Suspension Unit with an external reservoir, lightweight 17-inch wheels and roadster-specific geometry. Designed for stability on loose surfaces, the Scrambler 400 X has a long wheelbase and travel suspension, a large front wheel and wide handlebars. Its slender waistline and ergonomic configuration help keep the rider’s hips near the ground for deft manoeuvring, while high-grip foot pegs positioned low and wide facilitate a natural off-road standing position.

Both bikes come in three two-tone paint scheme options with high-quality finishes. The Speed 400 is adorned with a prominent Triumph tank graphic, indicative of its dynamic nature as a roadster. The Scrambler” tank stripe and triangle badge on its all-road counterpart, meanwhile, are surrounded by rugged practical features that attest its intrepid will to conquer the challenges presented by any terrain. These include protective components for the headlight, radiator and sump, as well as prominent handguards and a long front-mudguard.

The Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X each come with a service interval of 10,000 miles, and a two-year unlimited mileage warranty. And these fun conglomerations of style and function feature a steering lock, anti-theft immobiliser and a transponder chip in the ignition key that ensures only the owner can start the engine, continuing to enjoy their motoring adventures without obstacle.
