Ulysse Nardin’s shark-inspired diving watch takes inspiration from these majestic creatures while protecting their future

Sharks are one of the most misunderstood creatures of the oceans. Often portrayed as predators, many species are in fact under threat from human activity such as overfishing. As a crucial part of the ecosystem, this has far-reaching consequences for our planet.

As a specialist in diving watches, it’s a cause that is close to Ulysse Nardin’s heart. The animal has long been an emblem for the brand, and in recent years it has dedicated itself to supporting research and campaigns to further our understanding and protection of these species.

This year it has stepped up its action further still by partnering with the Shark Trust, a charitable organisation dedicated to safeguarding the future of sharks, skates and rays. It has also brought on board a new friend of the brand, Mike Coots, who, after having his leg torn off by a bullhead shark in his native Hawaii, has turned this experience into positive change. As a professional photographer, he highlights the beauty of these creatures, and campaigns against the possession and use of shark products.

Its latest release, the Diver Chronograph Great White 44mm, also has a philanthropic side. A limited-edition run of 300 pieces, like its other shark-themed watches, one per cent of its sales will be donated to support non-profit organisations. Its sleek design pays tribute to this marine wildlife in other ways. The grey of the dial recalls the hue of shark skin, while a motif of the animal makes an appearance on the white rubber strap. Meanwhile the wording “great white” takes pride of place under the logo.

As expected, the watch is robust enough for all sorts of underwater excursions, where you might even be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the animals up close. This includes a water resistance of 300 metres, and precise and reliable timekeeping in the form of the Ulysse Nardin Caliber UN-150 self-winding movement.
