Seaworthy: Breitling Superocean 44 UK Special Edition

Breitling’s famous diving watch, the Superocean, gets a sleek black-and-blue makeover in this UK special edition

When Breitling launched the Superocean in 1957, it was offered in two distinct models. The first, a chronograph, tapped into the watchmaker’s considerable expertise in high-performance timepieces, intended for seasoned divers. Meanwhile a time-only model appealed to a burgeoning market of amateur enthusiasts heading to the beaches on their holidays. Despite their different audiences both offered reliability, including a water resistance of 200 metres, without compromising on style.

These key tenets are central to the Superocean collection today, encapsulated in a new UK special edition handsomely pairing a blue bezel with black dial. Of course, it’s not just its look that has evolved to meet modern tastes and standards: the limited edition of 250 pieces offers an impressive water resistance of 1,000 metres, one of the best on the market.

While plenty stylish for on shore, care has been taken to ensure it performs just as well at sea. This includes the highly legible dial, thanks to the Super-LumiNova coating on the numerals, indexes and hands that allow for easy reading in all conditions. The watch is powered by the Breitling Caliber 17, with a 38-hour power reserve, while it comes with a choice of a sporty rubber strap or dressier stainless steel option.
