Aprilia updates its 1980s Tuareg motorbike with all the trimmings

The new Aprilia Tuareg 660 is a motorbike designed for those who want to combine on- and off-road riding. In other words, it’s a machine that offers the best of both worlds, tackling tarmac and various terrains with an ease that hints at Aprilia’s history in both motocross and track racing.

With low weight but a strong composite frame, adjustable suspension settings and an 18-litre fuel tank, providing good range, the bike is built for proper exploration. Its 660cc engine is smaller than other adventure bikes, such as Honda’s 1100cc Africa Twin, but Aprilia’s new model has been tuned for a wider torque spread, meaning it is responsive at lower revs yet still zippy enough when you’re pushing it. This engine tweak makes for smoother handling through the dirt, too.

It’s also kitted out with a full range of riding assistance – there are four different travel modes to cover all circumstances, plus on- and off-road ABS options that are both easily disabled for adventurers who prefer to go without. In addition, traction and cruise control make long journeys on asphalt a breeze.

There is undoubtedly a whiff of the ’80s in the look of this motorcycle, and it’s a reference to the first iteration of the Tuareg. Produced between 1985 and 1994, this early model was built with long-distance African rallies in mind, and helped to further the marque’s reputation for creating bikes that could endure heavy riding and racing.

Today, whether you’re doing the Dakar or nipping out to the supermarket, the Aprilia Tuareg 660 can certainly do both.
