Hublot supports the conservation of rhinos in Africa with a special edition watch

Among the more hidden effects of the recent pandemic are the challenges it presents in the conservation of some of the world’s endangered and at-risk species. In Africa, poaching is the biggest threat to rhinos on the continent and, up until 2020, it had been steadily decreasing thanks to the hard work of organisations such as Save Our Rhino Africa India (SORAI). However, the problem has remained urgent; over the last decade two thirds of the rhinos in South Africa’s Kruger Park have been killed by poachers, and today there is estimated to be fewer than 500 black rhinos remaining there.

The closing of the South African border, and the subsequent absence of foreign visitors to the park, has only compounded the issue. With a reduced footfall, poachers have been able to move undetected across the vast landscape, while the loss of national revenue means such wildlife protection organisations rely even more heavily on both private financial donors and a collaborative approach.

Recognising this urgency, Hublot is once again partnering with SORAI, creating a special edition of its Big Bang Unico to raise funds for critical work in this arena. Part of the proceeds of the sale of each watch will go to Care for Wild, the largest rhino sanctuary in the world, supported by SORAI. With a limited edition of 100 pieces, the timepiece fittingly takes inspiration from the natural colours of the bush in summer, decked out in two shades of green that extend from the coloured ceramic case to the camouflage strap, available in a choice of rubber or velcro.
