The pizza maker who set out to prove that vegan and delicious go hand in hand, has accomplished its mission with its at-home kit
The background
Established in 2019 in Norwich, Vegan Dough Co has been proving ever since that plant-based pizzas are just as delicious as their meat and dairy covered equivalents. Lockdown inspired Vegan Dough Co to create a make-at-home kit for hungry pizza lovers who wanted to try their hand making their own pies. The team now releases new at-home options to try and craft in one’s own kitchen. Vegan Dough Co also delivers ready-made pizzas and sides across parts of London, Norwich and Brighton but the at-home kits are a fun and tasty lockdown distraction worth trying.
The meal kit
The Vegan Dough Co kit includes dough and a selection of toppings, plus easy to follow instructions. Brummell tried the Godfather pizza kit for two, which included two balls of dough, each big enough to make a 12-inch pizza and the pre-portioned toppings: tomato pizza sauce, grated vegan mozzarella, vegan nduja (made from seitan, herbs, spices, soy sauce, nutritional yeast and garlic), broccolini, olives, crispy onions and chilli oil. Everything was generously portioned to make sure the pizzas were as tasty and indulgent as you’d expect if ordering in.

How many does it feed?
Two, although you an order a box to feed four from Vegan Dough Co.
Packaging
The pizza-making kit came in a chilled and carefully packed box with all ingredients portioned out into plastic pots or envelopes.
Prep
You will need a few items of simple equipment to prep the pizzas including a rolling pin, baking paper and a baking sheet, plus some flour to dust. Stretching and rolling the dough to a 12-inch, thin circle was fun but harder than one might imagine. Once it’s the right size it’s just a matter of spooning on and smoothing out the pizza sauce, and evenly distributing the cheese, nduja, broccolini and olives. When the pizza is fully covered, it goes in a hot oven for 10 minutes, but needs to be turned around and taken off the baking sheet (if you can) halfway through. Once the crust is crisp and golden, the pizza is ready to come out and be sprinkled with the onions and chilli oil. It’s simple to prepare and is fun to do, a very welcome different activity to try in lockdown.
The food
Vegan Dough Co certainly prove that animal-product-free pizza is truly delicious. They are clearly experts in picking and creating the very best vegan versions of ingredients – the plant-based mozzarella was one of the best Brummell has every tried. The pizza was gooey and flavoursome, as all pizzas should be. And the choice of toppings are interesting and elevated, much more exciting than anything you’d be able to get from most pizza delivery services or think to come up with at home. The Vegan Dough Co box felt like a real treat.
The price
A box to feed two is £19, a box to feed four is £35.
The verdict
For vegetarians, vegans, those looking to reduce their animal product consumption, or in fact anyone who likes pizza, Vegan Dough Co’s boxes are a fantastic thing to order for a fun evening. The pizzas are delicious and entertaining to make and Vegan Dough Co has put together some fantastic flavour and topping combinations. Homemade pizza feels healthier too!
