Omega updates its famous Moonwatch with a new movement offering enhanced precision and anti-magnetism

Throughout its history, Omega’s timepieces have played a key role in milestone events that have tested the limits of innovation and ingenuity. No more so is this true than for the iconic Speedmaster, which accompanied the Apollo 11 astronauts as they made their groundbreaking landing on the moon in 1969.

It’s a testament to Omega’s pioneering spirit that it continues to build on this legacy while simultaneously improving and adapting the capabilities of its timekeeping to the modern world. The latest Speedmaster Moonwatch Chronometer collection is a case in point. The watches now come powered by a state-of-the-art Master Chronometer-certified movement, bringing a new level of anti-magnetism that offers protection against the effects technology such as phones, tablets and laptops can have on the performance of a watch.

‘When updating a sacred timepiece like the Speedmaster Moonwatch, every detail must be true to its original spirit,’ says Raynald Aeschlimann, president and CEO of Omega. ‘This chronograph is recognised the world over, so we’ve approached its design with the most sincere respect, while taking its movement to the next level.’

It takes its cues directly from that famous model worn by the Apollo 11 astronauts, referred to as the ST 105.012. This influence can be seen in details including its asymmetrical case, step dial and double bevel caseback.

As well as the addition of the Calibre 3861, its ‘Master Chronometer’ status denoting that it adheres to the highest standards of precision and performance in the industry, there are a number of other carefully considered enhancements. These include an ergonomic, integrated metal bracelet inspired by those seen on Moonwatch models in the past, finished with a new clasp. Meanwhile the minute track on the dial is now split into three divisions to reflect the Calibre 3861’s frequency. This latest collection comprises eight models in different dial and material combinations ranging from classic stainless steel to red-hued Sedna gold and Canopus gold, a white-gold alloy exclusive to the watchmaker.
