The founder of Punchy Drinks discusses chess, good pub food, and improving his golf swing
Can you explain the concept behind Punchy Drinks?
Punchy makes delicious natural soft drinks with adventurous flavours. A few years ago, we saw an opportunity to create a vibrant new brand that had all the health benefits that people are after in today’s society, while not sacrificing on flavour.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given in your career and why?
When I was thinking about quitting my job in advertising to start Punchy, a mate said to me the worst thing that can happen is that it fails, you learn a lot, and end up sleeping on your parents’ sofa for a few months while you job hunt again. It really contextualised the risk and fear of failure to me. I handed in my notice soon after and haven’t looked back.
Who is your role model and how have they influenced you in your work?
My dad. He was a successful ad man and has worked with some of the biggest brands in the world. He is a constant source of inspiration and wisdom and has helped me endlessly.
What item, apart from your passport, can you not travel without?
I have a beautiful small marble chess set that I picked up in a market in India for about 10 quid when I was there a few years ago. It is the best thing I have ever bought. It has made a lot of journeys and holidays much more fun.
Where is your favourite place to eat in London and why?
Either Inko Nito in Soho, which is the most incredible sushi/grill restaurant, or The Anchor & Hope in Southwark, which does, in my opinion, the best pub food in London.
What do you like to do on a day off?
I recently picked up golf again. I am terrible but have loved it as a way of getting away from everything for a bit and catching up with old mates.
What are your biggest passions?
Food, drink and Liverpool FC.
What is one positive thing that you have learnt this year that you will carry through into 2021?
The gift of patience.
