Victorinox is the company that invented the Swiss Army Knife in 1891, predating the birth of the term ‘multifunctional’ by decades, but defining it perfectly. When Victorinox launches a new product, it rarely fulfils a mere single role. And that is true of its latest collection of luggage, Lexicon, all of which has a built-in multi-tool.

Constructed from strong virgin polycarbonate and available in sleek and stylish black or titanium colours, the Lexicon range includes extra-large, large and medium hardside suitcases and – most usefully for frequent fliers – a hardside carry-on. A new moulding process means the Lexicon’s handles and quiet, smooth dual-caster wheels are super-recessed. The technique also provides extra volume – up to 34 litres – without breaking airlines’ size limits. And, as you’d expect from the manufacturer of the iconic pocket knife, management of that space is faultless. As well as x-shaped compression straps, which keep folded items secure, there is a zippered divider wall with a large pocket and easy-to-clean lining, in addition to two zippered mesh pockets to hold a maximum of accessories between the trolley poles. In the checked-luggage sizes, there is also a removable suit bag.

So, what of the integrated multi-tool? Well, of course, as it’s hand luggage, it’s not a Swiss Army Knife. Instead, it provides a number of useful devices for the harried business traveller for whom a few extra minutes without connectivity can genuinely be very costly. There’s a pen for filling out immigration forms without digging into your bag and wasting time; a mobile phone tool for a quick swap between SIM cards as you land in a new country; and a USB port. This can be paired with a battery pack (sold separately) for convenient device charging.

This is all hidden beneath a sliding ID tag, part of a security system which also includes dual-coil, theft-proof zippers and an integrated Travel Sentry combination lock, which keeps you as secure as possible.
