Brummell’s Five ways to wear demonstrates how to style classic pieces for different effects. This issue Ralph Lauren styles a classic polo shirt

In the US, the game of polo is associated with the type of British sporting style that influenced Stateside preppy dressing. Ralph Lauren was inspired by the shirts worn by top players, who preferred turned-over collars that stayed down during play, and so developed an item that has become a staple of his collections and a regular in the wardrobes of those whose idea of riding may not go beyond a spin on a bicycle.

The polo shirt’s popularity stems from its versatility. More casual than a formal shirt, smarter than a T-shirt, it is the perfect summer top. Lauren’s signature rib-knit collar and armbands resist stretching and taping reinforces the shoulders and neckline.

As well as coming in no less than 85 colours, Lauren has introduced a weathered mesh version in which the original breathable, soft, textured cotton fabric is washed to give a relaxed, timeworn look from the start.
