A truly versatile timepiece is a rare find, especially when it comes to diving watches. If you want something that can survive more than a quick dip in the swimming pool, there’s a plethora of options with all manner of technical features. But all too often these come at the expense of comfort and style, an essential when you consider most watches will be staying firmly on land for most of their lifetime.

This is where Tudor’s new Pelagos 39 excels. It follows in the lineage of not only the watchmaker’s decades-long history as a pioneer in underwater timekeeping, but the Pelagos family’s reputation as precise and robust companions for even the toughest of dives. This new iteration skillfully finds a balance between cutting-edge horology and fashion, aided by its thoroughly wearable new case size, a svelter silhouette suited to both larger and more petite wrists.

It retains Tudor’s classic look, including heritage-inspired “Snowflake” hands, with a strong focus on aesthetic refinement. Its satin-brushed titanium case contrasts with the black ceramic bezel and dial, both finished in a sunray satin finish. With a keen focus on ergonomics, the diameter of the bezel is slightly larger than that of the middle case to improve the grip. The chunky hour markers lend a graphic look, their large size combined with luminescent properties allowing for optimal legibility in all conditions.

This reliability continues with the movement. The Manufacture Calibre MT5400 is incredibly robust, with an accuracy above and beyond that set by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC), a gold standard for precision timekeeping. Meanwhile, its 70-hour power reserve leaves no question it can outlast longer dives, or even just a leisurely weekend away. And whatever the activity it comes with a strap to match, with the choice of a rubber or metal, the latter quickly adjustable without tools thanks to the Tudor T-fit clasp.
