If there’s one industry that knows about the preservation and passing down of skills over time, it’s watchmaking. And as the oldest manufacture in continuous production, since its beginnings in Geneva in 1755, Vacheron Constantin’s commitment to the tradition of artistry and handcraftsmanship is evident in its breathtaking intricate creations to this day.

This ethos is something that extends beyond its timepieces into its philanthropic endeavours, with its “One of Not Many” mentorship programme empowering young people to explore their passions and talents under the guidance of some of the leading figures in their field. The scheme first began in the Middle East, with six entrepreneurial Emirati women chosen to receive help and expertise in launching their own business ventures. This has now expanded to an initiative in London helping shine a spotlight on up-and-coming musical talent.

The watchmaker’s partnership with the iconic Abbey Road Studios, which has had everyone from the Beatles to Kanye West through its doors, dates back to 2018. Now the two are working together to nurture a new generation of stars, focusing on those who have not yet signed with a label.

The first budding musician to benefit is London-based Ewan J Phillips, who was chosen by world-renowned French musician and director Woodkid, the mentor for the project. The first product of this collaboration is Phillips’s track Say You Never Loved Me, which will be pressed to vinyl, complete with a B-side featuring an interview between the two. Meanwhile the track is also available digitally on popular streaming platforms.

‘To be able to pass on knowledge and artistic sensibility by working with young talents is a privilege for me as a musician’, said Woodkid. ‘Above and beyond the mentor-apprentice relationship, the sharing and discussions Ewan and I have enjoyed are an enrichment for both of us.’
