Take flight: Bell & Ross BR 03-92 Radiocompass

Bell & Ross takes inspiration from radionavigation instruments for a colourful and technical new release

Of all the brands renowned for their aeronautical timepieces, Bell & Ross perhaps takes the most direct visual inspiration from the technical tools found in the cockpits of aeroplanes. Its latest release, the BR 03-92 Radiocompass, is the ultimate expression of this design ethos, its idiosyncratic appearance paying homage to radionavigation instruments.

This model takes its name from the radio compass, an onboard receiver that defines the position and direction of an aircraft via beacons on the ground. It’s an important piece of kit that allows pilots to fly safely, even in challenging conditions, such as when night falls or the weather takes a turn.

The biggest influence of onboard instrumentation design comes through in the bold colour scheme, with neon highlights of yellow, green and orange on the minutes, hours and seconds hands contrasting sharply against the sleek all-black dial and matt ceramic case. The indications on the dial are equally as intriguing – the numerals are displayed in circles to the outer edge, unusually with each number turned towards the centre of the dial, as typically found on navigation instruments.

Despite its novel appearance, like all of the watchmaker’s output just as much attention is put on performance. True to its origins, legibility is king. The numerals use Isonorm typography, with its pleasingly clear and functional form that is easy to read at a quick glance, while the white triangle at 12 o’clock enables you to easily find your bearings at night. These, along with the coloured hands, are coated with Super-LumiNova for that glowing final touch.
