Today, as Formula 1 cars zoom past on the track they are distinguished by a flash of decoration nodding to their teams and sponsors. However, right back to the beginning of organised motor racing, bright colour and eye-catching design has always played an essential role in the sport. Racers painted their cars in shades that denoted their country or origin, and with it the likes of British racing green and “rosso corsa” Italian red was born.

It is such vibrant shades that TAG Heuer is celebrating with a new trio of its Formula 1 Chronograph in red, yellow and green. Subtle details ensure optimal legibility even in the most high-pressure of races, with the hands and indexes for each colour carefully chosen for their contrast and clarity. The bold look plays into the high-octane nature of the watch, with its rugged 43mm case in stainless steel featuring a black PVD tachymeter-scale bezel, perfect for keeping time of the all-important speed as the cars make their laps around the track. Finishing it off in fitting style is the screw-down steel caseback, showcasing a chequered flag motif, the sign of a successfully completed race.

Among the first to put the watch through its paces is the watchmaker’s new ambassador Sky Brown. Adept at pushing limits to their extremes, the record-breaking skateboarder was the youngest person to compete at the 2020 Olympics, at just 13 years old. Not only did the Great Britain team member pick up a bronze medal, she also has her sights set on competing in surfing in the 2024 Summer Olympics – the ultimate all-rounder.
