When reviving vintage models it is often hard to stay faithful to the original design while simultaneously appealing to the watch connoisseur of today. However, this is something that Longines has become adept at doing through its Heritage line, striking a balance between vintage good looks and modern practicalities.
The latest addition is the Heritage Military Marine Nationale, inspired by the reference 5774 produced exclusively for the French Navy in 1947. This classic timepiece retains all its mid-century charm, updated from its 33.5mm diameter to a more sizeable 38.5mm to suit contemporary tastes.
For keen-eyed enthusiasts, many of its original features make an appearance. The timepieces were identified using the letters ‘M.N’ (Marine Nationale) engraved on the caseback, replicated here along with the words ‘Longines FAB. Suisse featured on the dial. Additionally, the watchmaker chose not to feature a date indication in order to preserve the look of the original.
Continuing the vintage feel is the lightly grained dial with hour circle and hands coated with brown Super-LumiNova, protected by a domed sapphire crystal. It is powered by the automatic L888.5 movement, featuring a silicon balance spring developed exclusively for Longines.
