Double take: Certina DS-2 Powermatic 80

Certina revives a classic Sixties design, now powered by its state-of-the-art automatic movement

The 1960s was a golden era of watch design, and many of the greatest timepieces to come out of the decade remain enduring classics that have never gone out of style. Certina’s DS-2 is one such example of the refinement of the time, with its tonneau-shaped case and pared-back dial that looks just as at home paired with a sophisticated leather strap as with a sportier metal bracelet.

This model from 1968 is being revived with the DS-2 Powermatic 80, combining this retro appeal with a thoroughly modern approach to both timekeeping and materials. The former is seen in its innovative automatic movement, fitted with an Nivachron balance spring that enhances the precision with its anti-magnetic properties. The watch also benefits from Certina’s “double security” system from which it takes its name, denoting a range of measures taken to ensure protection against the elements. This includes water resistance to 200 metres and a screw-down crown.

Its vintage origins are further brought out in the accessories. The dials come in a choice of four variations, satin-brushed silver, blue or black, as well as a more contemporary matte black. Meanwhile the stainless-steel watch can be worn on a Milanese mesh bracelet, fully completing the heritage feel, or a modern Nato strap made from a material that reuses plastics fished from the oceans.
