Robin Georges is standing on the edge of a cliff with his feet together and his hands up in the air. He takes a deep breath, bends his knees, gently leans forward and just like that, he jumps and flies. Within a matter of seconds, after pulling off a few extremely technical moves, he hits the water beneath with the most minimal of splashes, a near-perfect entry – his body straight, feet together and toes pointed. In this moment timing is everything, a sentiment he recently put to the ultimate test in a campaign for TAG Heuer. Likes Georges the watchmaker is no stranger to pushing boundaries in its field, with its revamped diving watch the Aquaracer the latest example, combining technical timekeeping with innovative design.
Cliff diving is not for everyone; certainly not the faint of hearted, but for Georges, it’s become a way of best expressing himself and his ability. Ever since the age of eight, Georges has been a gymnastics enthusiast but it wasn’t until he turned 13 and discovered jumping on trampoline that he found his true calling. Back flips and other such manoeuvres on the ground in a controlled environment quickly escalated into diving off things, and the 26-year-old Frenchman hasn’t looked back since. But where some divers chose a more conventional path of platform diving and training for events like the Olympics, Georges had other, far more extreme ideas – like cliffs, bridges and other such highly perilous places at dizzying heights.
Today, despite a number of heavy injuries endured and a huge amount of competition in the sport, Georges is regarded as one of the top cliff divers in the world with a variety of championship wins to his name. His following on YouTube and the investment from big names demonstrates that there’s an avid adrenaline-fuelled desire for extreme sports such as cliff diving and Georges is only too happy to feed the demand. His starring role in the TAG Heuer Aquaracer campaign, alongside free diver Julie Gautier and big wave surfer Kai Lenny, only further speaks to the demanding and captivating nature of the activity. Together the trio were the perfect candidates to put the luxury tool watch through its paces, which has recently been re-engineered to enhance its ergonomics, style and underwater performance.
‘The edge is not a limit, it’s a moment, a vision, a distance daring to be reached; an answer daring to be found. There is no turning back, forget about time and you transcend reality,” documents the voice behind the campaign.
Georges inclusion among such esteemed sportspersons is an example of how highly regarded his sport has become. Indeed, on his social media he shared, ‘I’m very proud to be the chosen cliff diver among a lot of very skilled divers from all around the world.’
Despite the clear and obvious dangers to cliff diving though, Georges is eager to point out that the sport isn’t just about power and strength. ‘In cliff diving, power is important but remains inferior to control, an essential quality in this magnificent sport,’ says Georges. As you might expect, his Instagram feed is filled with hundreds of videos of examples of, in his words: ‘Full sends.’ Or in other words Georges at full-throttle with 100 per cent commitment diving off various incredibly scenic cliffs all around France and further afield in the world. From each dive to the next though, one thing is alway certain: Georges is in control of his own destiny, and long may that continue.
