THE BACKGROUND
Travel lovers are always keen to discover the next hidden gem; the off-the-beaten-track place that will raise eyebrows and pique interest among friends. But then, there are certain holiday destinations that require minimal thought and effort and just tick all the right boxes, time and time again.
The Greek islands are one of the most popular summer holiday destinations in the world. In fact, Greece is poised to be the number 1 destination for 2023 (at least for sun-deprived Brits). Around three million people from the UK visited Greece last year, and among the top three islands to visit is Corfu. The second-largest of the Ionian islands is famed for its crystal-clear waters, stunning beaches (all 115 of them), white-washed buildings and ancient history (which is impressive, even for Greece). Corfu has it all: sunny Mediterranean climate, natural beauty at every turn, fabulous food, culture, history and in this case it comes complete with a James Bond-worthy luxury villa and water-based lifestyle (fun fact: 007 flick, For Your Eyes Only was filmed largely in Corfu).
THE VILLA
If 007-style decadence is top of your agenda this summer, then look no further than Villa Aliki, located on the west of the island, around a 20-minute drive from the pretty fishing village of Kassiopi. This beautiful villa actually comprises two buildings, a main house and guest cottage sleeping up to 10 people in total, within its own private gated estate. The architecture is modern and impeccable, with sweeping open-plan rooms, simple yet elegant furnishings and a flawless outdoor-indoor design. Highlights include a Jacuzzi housed under its own pavilion overlooking the sea, two outdoor bars, an imposing 25-metre infinity pool and an alfresco dining area under a wisteria-draped pergola. A private chef is on hand to cater to your every whim (literally) while property manager Sue can arrange everything from day trips to restaurant bookings. The villa is operated by luxury private rental company SJ Villas, which offers a bespoke service. Co-owner Tom Menier praises the ‘staggering’ attention to detail of Villa Aliki, as well as its dramatic setting. ‘The house is almost cut into the rocks, with direct views to the sea,’ he commented. ‘Corfu is all about boats, so once you fly into Corfu, we will arrange a private car into town and then a boat out to the villa. It’s incredible.’
THE FINE DETAILS
Villa Aliki costs €58,000 per week to rent in high season (July-August). There is still some availability in July and late August. For more information and to book, contact sjvillas.co.uk
