THE BACKGROUND
There is something inherently British about holidaying in Spain. Many towns along the sun-kissed Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol – for better or worse – have adapted to the annual Brits abroad infiltration; with myriad British-style pubs and greasy spoons and barely a Spanish word spoken. But while it would be easy to think of Spain only in these touristy terms, it would be ill-advised to dismiss the country entirely. Spain has so much to offer than just sunshine and Sangria. It’s a country of great geographic and cultural diversity; from the sultry Moorish legacy of Andalusia to the rustic Basque country, the cobbled streets of Santiago de Compostela to the architectural splendour of Barcelona and Valencia. And that’s just the mainland. Spain encompasses more than 40 inhabited islands – each with its own unique history, landscape and culture.
Which brings us to Mallorca. The largest of the Balearic islands, it’s easy to see why Mallorca attracts around 11.5 million visitors a year with its mild Mediterranean climate (which equates to hot, dry summers) and idyllic landscapes ranging from limestone mountains to 550 km of coastline dotted with unspoiled sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters.
THE VILLA
Palma is the capital of Mallorca and the most popular tourist destination on the island. But travel to the east coast and you’ll find the beautiful mountain-top town of Capdepera, an area that’s decidedly off-the-beaten-track and full of ancient and natural wonder. Its history may date back to the Bronze Age, but the paint has barely dried on the stunning Sa Font villa, a new and highly exclusive property under the SJ Villas portfolio. Every detail of this sprawling home has been meticulously planned and executed, down to individual cupboard doors and window frames handmade to the highest specifications. It’s a design lover’s paradise, with bespoke furnishings and a subdued yet tasteful colour palette with contemporary finishes. Sa Font overlooks the sea and four out of the five bedrooms open out directly onto the landscaped gardens, swimming pool and the sea. It’s a social setting – perfect for bringing the whole family – with a large communal living room and plenty of seating areas dotted around the grounds; from the roof terrace all the way down to the pool. The concierge team will look after you throughout your stay, with two women at the house on call to cook delicious local fare.
