The Belstaff Trialmaster turns 75

The British outfitter celebrates its bestselling jacket’s milestone anniversary with a series of events and limited-edition products

Style 27 Apr 2023

Made from hardy waxed cotton with a classic silhouette – four front pockets, belted waist and neck – the Belstaff Trialmaster is, quite simply, a style icon. This hardy outerwear staple is as synonymous and emblematic of Belstaff as the Burberry trench coat before it. And, like the patented rain mac, the Trialmaster is utilitarian by design while unashamedly stylish.

The Belstaff Trialmaster was originally made in 1948 to withstand the harsh conditions of the off-road Scottish Six Days Trial – which remains the oldest event of its kind in the world. Seventy-five years on, the jacket has remained Belstaff’s bestselling and most celebrated garment. And although it has seen several upgrades since its inception, the iconic silhouette remains unchanged and unsurpassed.

For its milestone 75th anniversary, Belstaff has several events planned over the course of 2023 under the “Old is Good” campaign. Celebrating the past, present and future of the Trialmaster is the launch of three limited-edition designs, which will be available from the start of May 2023.

The “Tribute” edition pays sartorial homage to the original Trialmaster designs created for the Scottish Six Day Trials, while the modern “75 Edition” is a spin on the classic design with bold blue trim, lining and hardware. The “Concept” model looks to the future of the icon, introducing a semi-transparent outer shell made from water-repellent taffeta. The 75-year anniversary jackets will each be produced in a limited run of just 100, alongside a special-edition pin that comes with every jacket, making it the ultimate collector’s item for the perennially adventurous.
