Fashion and clothing is one of the world’s most polluting businesses. The industry emits more greenhouse gas than aviation and shipping combined. It uses 98 million tonnes of non-renewable resources per year and is predicted to add 22 million tonnes of plastic microfibers to the oceans between 2015 and 2050 according to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.
British menswear designer Oliver Spencer is keenly aware of the environmental costs of the fashion industry and is taking steps to make his brand sustainable and green. To mark this move forward, as well as the release of the brand’s AW18 pre-collection this May, Oliver Spencer has collaborated with award-winning internationally renowned artist Wolfgang Buttress to produce a sculpture for its Berwick Street store, Soho.
The multi-sensory artwork, Reverie invites the audience to explore and relax in an environment rich with wildflowers, flax and true indigo plants as well as sound provided by engineers Hoare Lea and scent from Margate-based luxury cosmetics brand, Haeckels. The resulting flowerscape sculpture encourages visitors to pause and contemplate the beauty of the natural world and the crucial role in its continuation played by pollinators, such as bees, as well as the role sustainable fashion can take in supporting the environment.
‘I have admired Wolf’s work for a long time and I am excited that we have an opportunity to work together on a project; one that harmonises art and fashion through our mutual respect for the environment. I love that this installation looks like it’s meant to be there, it’s something our customer is going to really enjoy interacting with. I see this type of interactive story-telling as the future of retail,’ says Spencer.
‘Reverie’ is on display for four weeks from Thursday 17 May at Oliver Spencer, 81 Berwick Street, W1F 8TW, oliverspencer.co.uk
