Since the Italian “wasp” began flying off proverbial shelves in post-World War II Italy, its manufacturers have never stopped buzzing with aesthetic and practical ideas. In the beginning, there was Vespa’s forward-thinking creator, Corradino d’Ascanio, who helped Enrico Piaggio make the first of these scooters affordable, versatile and aerodynamic. This year, a new Vespa GTS range comprises four models in each of which, owing to a unique array of stylish and technical details, one senses a distinctive personality. These include the classic and elegant GTS, the contemporary GTS Super, the sporty GTS SuperSport, and the ultra-technological Vespa GTS SuperTech.

All are available with one of two highly efficient engines. The first is the 125 “i-get” engine, which was designed to reduce fuel consumption. It’s perfect for travelling in cities such as London, on whose roads one must frequently stop. With high torque that allows the scooter to repeatedly propel back into action, the engine also adopts Vespa’s patented Start & Stop system, one of many innovations that, in spite of its name, attests the endless dynamism of Vespa’s revolutionary path. This system automatically turns off the engine three to seven seconds after stopping. A slight twist of the throttle instantly re-starts it in total silence.

The 300 HPE (High Performance Engine), meanwhile, is the most powerful engine with which any Vespa has been equipped. Piaggio technicians have optimised its thermodynamic output and greatly reduced its friction and noise, dampening the buzz that led to the brand’s name.

Across the range, a new keyless system streamlines operations including starting these engines, opening the seat, and locking the steering column. Meanwhile, 12-inch wheels and a new front suspension provide a level of stability that allows riders to travel safely at higher speeds.

And there are many innovations particular to certain models. On all SuperSport and SuperTech models, Android and iOS smartphones can be connected to an on-board electronic system via Bluetooth. This system provides call management using a practical joystick and the ability to make calls or listen to music through vocal commands. Like many new laptops, the Vespa GTS SuperTech has a TFT colour display. This serves as a navigation system. The other models have LCD displays showing comprehensive trip data, from average speed to instantaneous consumption.

Vespa scooters have always kept up with changing fashion and, in some cases, have been at its forefront; they were mounted, for instance, by many of London’s fashion-conscious Mods. Today, these stunning new versions of the Vespa GTS balance the brand’s celebrated silhouettes and tasteful colour palettes with novel aesthetic tweaks that reinforce their unique spirits. For example, the GTS Super is available in three glossy pastel colours. Its contemporary feel is amplified by graphite-coloured rims with a diamond finish, a double upholstered seat with piping, and chrome elements combined with sporty black details.

Vespa’s new GTS range has achieved the heights of style and functionality in today’s scootering world. And if you’d like to enjoy them, all the versions of the new Vespa GTS are available at Piaggio Group dealers with prices starting from £5,250 for the GTS 125 version and from £6,000 for the 300 HPE versions.
