Audi is backing a “MaterialLoop” project that aims to make the recycling of old cars into a more circular process. At the moment, most materials from an end-of-life car – such as steel and plastic – get “downgraded” and turned into material for the building industry or recycled. The MaterialLoop project looks to keep the quality in the process, enabling the materials to be reused in car production, thus lowering the overall carbon footprint. This will reduce the amount of virgin raw materials that will need to be extracted and produced. The process can also be applied to products such as aluminium and glass, which Audi is already using in the Q4 e-tron by melting down glass granulate and turning it into new windscreens.
