Veuve Clicquot first released La Grande Dame champagne in 1972 to celebrate its bicentenary and honour Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin. As François Clicquot’s widow, she took her late husband’s company to new heights, inventing vintage and rosé champagnes. Only 24 vintages have achieved Grande Dame status, the latest being the 2015 (£170), in which pinot noir dominates. Women also create the artwork for La Grande Dame. The latest is Paola Paronetto, who incorporates paper pulp in her ceramic works, echoed in textured Veuve Clicquot gift boxes.
