Maureen The autumn-winter season is a time of ushering in the new, and for the New York branch of eminent auction house Phillips, this October sees a high-profile selection of rare and limited-edition prints from leading artists and photographers go under the hammer.

Phillips was established in London in 1796 by Harry Phillips, a former senior clerk to James Christie. Despite its long and prestigious history, Phillips is today recognised as a ‘dynamic and forward-thinking auction house’, conducting sales in the exclusive categories of contemporary art, photographs, editions, design and watches and jewellery.

On 1 October – the first sale of the autumn season – some 250 lots will go up for auction, featuring a range of exceptional prints from masters of the genre. Highlights include stills from Cleaning the House by the self-proclaimed ‘grandmother of performance art’ Marina Abramović, rare prints by Robert Mapplethorpe, Cindy Sherman and Hannah Wilke, and a stark black and white triptych of the Baltic Sea by Japanese photographer and architect Hiroshi Sugimoto.

Other highlights include two private collections: The Feminist Thread from collector Helen Kornblum and World View: Property from a Private Collection. The latter features 40 photographs from seminal photographers such as André Kertész and Robert Frank in a collection that Vanessa Hallett, head of photographs at Phillips Worldwide says is, ‘Full of visual and cultural juxtapositions that address universal themes and experiences’.

Auction viewing is between 26-30 September 2019. The auction takes place on 1 October 2019; phillips.com
