As winemakers across the globe explore an array of sustainable and environmentally friendly production methods, a whole new vocabulary has entered the wine market. But what do all these new terms and labels – such as biodynamic, organic, natural, low-intervention and dry farming – actually mean?

London’s oldest wine merchant Berry Bros & Rudd is stepping in to help, with a special tasting event designed to demystify the language surrounding new and revived winemaking techniques. It means you can approach your wine purchases with the same ethical principles you may already have adopted for your diet and grocery shopping.

‘Increasingly, we are seeing our customers searching for more than simply a bottle of wine,’ explains Berry Bros & Rudd wine director Mark Pardoe. ‘They are making more environmentally conscious decisions and they want to feel that what they’re buying aligns with their personal values.’

As eco-friendly wine grows so too does the industry’s vocabulary

On Thursday 28 March, more than 70 winemakers from around the world will be in residence at h Club in Covent Garden, to celebrate sustainability in wine and educate guests about how they are evolving to produce wines that not only taste great, but show respect for the health of our planet, too.

‘Most of our suppliers are relatively small-scale with both understanding and empathy for what the vine needs to be healthy and sustainably productive,’ says Pardoe. ‘It is now rare to find a producer of the quality we seek at Berry Bros & Rudd, who is not concerned with the environment.’

Guests will have the chance to chat directly with the producers about their approach to winemaking and how it impacts the taste. Experts from Berry Bros & Rudd will also be on hand to explain more about what the terms found on labels and wine lists actually mean.

There’ll be plenty of samples to try, accompanied by delicious canapés created by the h Club’s catering team, and Brummell readers can enjoy an exclusive £10 discount on the ticket price by entering the code ‘Berry’.

Down to Earth: a wine tasting rooted in sustainability, 5.30-8.30pm on Thursday 28 March 2019, The Gallery at h Club, 24 Endell Street, London WC2H 9HQ; tickets from £45 (£35 for Brummell readers, with promotional code ‘Berry’).
